423 (ex --) FORTIFICATIONS OF THE AUSTRIAN EMPIRE

Natural beauties, tradition and Mediterranean spirit characterise this trail dedicated to a fullday’s walk or a half day’s run. The trail starts in Bale, a place of exceptional cultural and historicalheritage and, passing by the kažuni, stone field houses where farmers used to storetools, leads to the sea, hidden beaches and to the forts rich with history. The Forno or Monfornocoastal fortress was built between 1902 and 1914, as part of the fortifications that guarded theapproach to Pula, the main port of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The Forno Fort was alsoreinforced with two artillery batteries, and our trail presents one of them, the San Benedetto. The surprises, however, do not end here: the Palud bay also awaits you near the campsite. About200 bird species live in this ornithological reserve. You can observe them all year round, and thevisit to the only bird reserve in Istria is only possible on foot.
