701 (ex 601) ST. SIMON'S TRAIL

The trail starts at the gates of the picturesque medieval settlement called Gračišće. The route descends along a gravel road to the ruins of the church of St. Simon (crkva sv. Šimuna), a hidden gem from the 14th century. After having taken a good look of the trail ahead of you in the company of the lonesome church perched on top of the hill offering astounding vistas, you will start to descend into the valley beneath you. A part of the steep trail is also used as a track for MTB downhill races. The path you are on leads to the village of Žlepčari. Then, the trail descends down the gravel road and mountain path along the creek all the way to the waterfall called Sopot, which is the lowest point of the circular Trail of St. Simon (staza sv. Šimuna). Sopot is one of the most beautiful and picturesque waterfalls in Istria and a favourite outing spot of both locals and foreign guests who wish to relish unspoiled nature.

After the waterfall, the trail ascends eastwards up to the village of Floričići, and from there continues along the asphalt path up to the village of Lovrići. Then, there is a ten-minute climb to the little church of St. Stephen (crkva sv. Stjepana) which has been watching over the valley and Sopot for centuries. The next stop on the route is another little church. It is the 15th century church of St. Mary Magdalene (crkva sv. Marije Magdalene) located on a hill offering views of tens of kilometres distant hills and villages and forgotten sacral monuments. Soon after passing the church, the trail continues along the asphalt road and only a kilometre before it ends, the trail turns onto a gravel road which runs parallel to the main road, but is at a higher altitude. Therefore, before you start to hear the noise of car engines, take one more look at the panorama you are leaving behind. The last part of the trail runs along the main road straight to Gračišće. The trail is rather open and sunny, and most enjoyable in spring and autumn.
