Disappearing from the noise of everyday life, the hiking trail from Stancija Bergamente reveals another, quieter face of Poreč — one that is ancient, hidden and rich in stories. Instead of the bustle of the city, the traveler is greeted by the whisper of leaves, the rhythmic rustling of dry grass, and the promise of a journey through time and untouched nature.
The path winds like a snake along a narrow dirt track, leading us beneath the roaring bypass through a shaded underpass — almost like stepping through a portal into another world. Turning right, we follow the sandy line of the gas pipeline. After only two hundred meters, across a dry streambed that bears witness to spring torrents, we turn left and enter the embrace of deep forest. Cycling signs gently guide us until we merge with the well-known Spyder cycling trail. Soon afterward, we turn left again onto a newly created forest path — a true gem of this route.
This section is magical. A network of narrow, twisting trails takes us through a smaller loop, and each bend reveals a new scene: sun-flecked oak groves, expanses of macchia scented with warm herbs and the fragrance of pine. After briefly crossing a paved road and a small overpass, the trail turns right and unveils its most dramatic segment — the ascent toward Porečke Mordele. These final 300 meters are a genuine challenge; the climb is steep and demands both breath and effort. But the reward that awaits is invaluable.
Mordele – Whispers of Ancient Times
Here, on these quiet hills, time seems to have stopped. Mordele is not merely a cluster of hills in the Poreč hinterland but a true open-air museum of prehistory.
- Hidden beneath these slopes are the remains of prehistoric fortresses and necropolises dating back 4,000 years — silent sentinels of the Bronze Age.
- On Mali Sveti Anđeo, in the stillness of the forest, stand mystical stone blocks weighing two to three tons. Arranged in semicircular and circular formations, the site has rightly earned the nickname “Istrian Stonehenge.” Their shape poses an age-old riddle: were they an astronomical observatory, an ancient calendar, or a sacred structure devoted to long-forgotten rituals?
- On Veliki Sveti Anđeo, archaeologists discovered an unfinished stone sarcophagus —another fragment in the puzzle of this sacred landscape.
Because Mordele is a protected archaeological treasure, we kindly ask that you treat this sacred ground with respect. Please leave every stone exactly where it has rested for millennia.
Enriched by the energy of this ancient site, we continue as the path descends through a tranquil valley. After turning left and walking a few hundred peaceful meters, we reach an asphalt road. We turn right, only to turn left again after 200 meters, returning to the familiar gas-pipeline path. Like an old companion, it leads us back through the underpass until a final short trail delivers us once again to our starting point — closing our circle and leaving us with memories of a journey steeped in nature and history.
